PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon officials are seeking more than $27 million in damages over dam repairs they say killed more than half a million Pacific lamprey fish in what they’ve described as one of the largest damages claims for illegal killing of wildlife in state history. In a claim filed in Douglas County Circuit Court on Friday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said that recent repairs to Winchester Dam in the southern part of the state resulted in the death of at least 550,000 juvenile Pacific lamprey, an eel-like fish key to local ecosystems and of cultural significance to many Native American tribes in the region. The fish is also listed as a protected species in Oregon.“The North Umpqua River’s diverse fish populations are unique within Oregon and are of considerable social, cultural, and economic importance locally and regionally,” the fish and wildlife department said in a news release. “The damages claim seeks reparation for the loss of a valuable public r...

Kiszla: Broncos would be crazy to trade Pat Surtain II, but smart to part ways with Jerry Jeudy

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:09:23 GMT

Burn it all down? As tempting as an angry response might be to a football team going nowhere, a fire sale is no way to rebuild the Broncos. So don’t bring me some hair-brained idea about trading cornerback Pat Surtain II for a bounty of future draft picks. I will gladly tell you, however, that it’s time for receiver Jerry Jeudy and the Broncos to go their separate ways.Lose at home on Sunday to the New York Jets, the only NFL team with a longer playoff drought than the Broncos, and the fingerprints of our old friend Nathaniel Hackett could be on more pink slips handed out in Denver.Drop to rock-bottom of the AFC standings with a 1-4 record, and there would be no need for the Broncos to tank for a shot at the No. 1 pick in the next year’s draft, when they could sell off veteran talent at the Oct. 31 trade deadline and watch a diminished roster get bullied for the remainder of this lost season. There would be no shortage of potential trade targets in a frustrated and anxious Denver lock...
