DENVER (KDVR) — Ginger Thompson and Breezy, her year-old Bengal cat, flew to Denver from Washington for a cat competition. While boarding their Southwest flight home Sunday, Breezy got out of her carrier. “They were getting me on the plane rushing me, and I set her down to get ready to put her under the seat, put my backpack up into the overhead bin, and was sort of jostled,” Thompson said. Did you know Denver is one of the freshest non-coastal places you can get fish? Thompson said she isn't sure how the latch broke. But when the carrier opened up, Breezy jumped out. Thompson tried to catch Breezy, but the cat fell between the airplane door and jet bridge onto the tarmac. “I saw her fall and she sort of tried to claw to stay up, but the momentum just took her down. And it wasn’t a jump or anything, it was more like just falling,” Thompson said. Thompson said she was ushered off the flight and has received little help from Southwest or the airport since the incident. “There’s been...

DENVER (KDVR) -- Wildflowers are blooming, and while it's not quite corn maze season, August and September bring the peak blooming season for sunflowers.Near Denver International Airport, fields of seemingly endless sunflowers have been growing since spring, waiting to be admired before they are harvested in September. How CPW plans to avoid livestock conflict while reintroducing wolves But why would one of the world's busiest airports use its land for farming crops like sunflowers? DIA spokesperson Stephanie Figueroa told FOX31 it's "in the airport's best interest to find the highest and best use of our property while supporting our primary mission as an airport."According to DIA, a high non-aeronautical revenue helps to lower operating costs for the airport and airline partners. That's why some land belonging to DIA is leased to businesses like car rental companies and farmers.Farmers rent land from DIA and use it to rotate multiple crops, including sorghum, corn, winter wheat, ...

DENVER (KDVR) -- Are Colorado residents Coloradans or Coloradoans?People may still individually debate which term they prefer, but the most widely and officially accepted demonym -- or term to denote a person who lives in or was born in a certain place -- is Coloradan. This recognition of "Coloradan" extends up to the federal government, whose style manual for federal publications recognizes the version without the "o" as the official way to refer to people from Colorado. Why is it Coloradan and not Coloradoan?A general rule for demonyms is to add "-an" to places that end in "o." Patriots sign ex-Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott to 1-year, $4 million deal, AP source says

Three-time Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott has signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots worth $4 million, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced the move, said the contract can be worth up to $6 million with incentives. The 28-year-old Elliott ran for 68 touchdowns and more than 8,000 yards in seven years with the Dallas Cowboys. He led the NFL in rushing yards in 2016, when he was the runner-up for the AP Rookie of the Year award, and again in 2018.He also has more than 2,300 receiving yards, and 12 TD catches.Elliott’s yards per game have gone down every season of his career, a trend that partly reflects the decreased usage of running backs in the NFL since the Cowboys used the No. 4 overall draft pick to select him in 2016. Under coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots have been especially disdainful of the load-carrying rusher, winning Super Bowls in t...

State breaks ground on new veterans facility – what does $482 million buy?

The ground was broken in south central Massachusetts on Monday where the state’s new Veterans’ Home in Holyoke will eventually open. The long term care home and hospital, funded in part by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs State Home Construction Grant Program, is expected to replace the former Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, located on the city’s Cherry Hill, with a new facility capable of providing care for up to 234 full time residents. Coming in at a cost of $482 million, the project will take about three years to wrap construction and five years to complete.Design of the 350,000 square-foot building, according to the construction partnership Commodore Builders and Walsh Brothers, Inc., is based off the VA’s “small house model” for veterans care, and floors will be divided into three “houses” of 12 beds, with each house receiving nursing support and shared community, dining and living spaces.Veterans will have access to on-site p...

Red Sox notebook: Finally nearing full strength, it’s time for Sox to show us who they really are

For all the ups and downs the Red Sox have endured this season, we still haven’t seen what they’re capable of at full strength. Now, the gang is nearly back together, and not a moment too soon.Trevor Story is back. Chris Sale is back. Garrett Whitlock is back. Tanner Houck’s return is right around the corner. For the first time all season the Red Sox will get to play with their full deck of cards, a crucial development as the club looks to fight its way back into the playoff picture. It also means many of the biggest knocks against this club may no longer be applicable. The days of relying on two openers a week are over, and now if the Red Sox go that route it will be a strategic decision rather than a necessity. The parade of depth arms who have kept the club afloat has reached its end too, and once Houck is activated the Red Sox pitching staff will arguably be as deep as it’s been at any point since the 2018 World Series. The shambolic middle infield that was c...

By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER (Associated Press)Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii this week, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters. As Hawaii officials claim there is a shortage of water available for firefighters, they’re pointing a finger at a recent court ruling that required more water be kept in East Maui streams amid drought and competing demands for use. Environmentalists are pushing back less than a week after the state’s attorney general’s office filed a petition with the Hawaii Supreme Court on Wednesday blaming a senior environmental court judge, for there not being enough water for firefighting. The dispute connects the current blazes to an earlier court battle that pit Hawaiian acti...
